The Illocutionary Force of Auditory Hallucination

Listen here. Warning: the video is disturbing in that it shows the extreme victimization of those who are subject to the commands of hallucinated voices. Why does this happen? Why are the voices perceived as disembodied spirits? Why do they moralize or command us? Why do they have radical authority over those who are unlucky enough to hear them? Beliefs, desires, and reasons seem woefully inadequate to capture the mental landscape of schizophrenic experience, so why are philosophers of mind content to discuss human psychology in such simplistic terms? Mel illustrates why we need a new paradigm to grapple with the human condition in its most primordial, psychotic form.
